I don't know where you are in the world, dick, but the only way you'll get this sorted is by coming home. You can sort it in one day:

Book car in for MOT (that's the only legal way you'll be able to drive it out of the pound)
Go to pound, pay release fee £200, storage fee £21 a day, a surety of £160 as you cannot tax the vehicle until it is MOT'd. You will get the surety back if you tax the vehicle within 14 days.
Drive car to MOT station, tax vehicle online, claim back your surety.

You cannot tax the vehicle whilst it is impounded even if it has a valid MOT.

Your car is probably worth around £9k, so it's got to be cheaper to fly home and sort it out.

We need to know how it is normally taxed - by you or the dealer.
Thus is baffling me - I still can't see any reference to what happened when the tax came up for renewal in 2012, 2013 and 2014 .
I think a trip home is the only suggestion I can make if your wife can't help sort it out
Can you perhaps SORN it and arrange for it to be collected and deposited somewhere - but not left on the actual road?

It can't be sorn'd when it is impounded and you need the same information to SORN as you do to tax it online.
dieseldick, it looks like if you don't get back here pdq your stuffed.
Factor, it is my belief that the car was purchased second hand in Jan 2014 or thereabouts. Not that that explains how the renewal procedure was dealt with last year though.
Dieseldick does seem confused about the age of the vehicle and how long he's had it.

Eccles cake. I agree with you,but I am wondering if perhaps he has also "forgotten" to insure the vehicle.

It is not possible to obtain tax without a current insurance policy being in force.
Any progress, dieseldick?
It is interesting that threads get forgotten about once the poster realises they have little defence for their careless (in)actions.....
From the OPs previous threads he has had a lot going on since before Christmas, a lot of personal crises.
It is understandable that things got overlooked.

I second your post Eccles Cake.

thanks guys for your help. car is now released.
Good job sorted. You will have to keep things in order now so there will be no repeated episodes.

How did you get it released, just in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation?
You can't dictate who posts where...
