My Saab 900 broke down today, quite a bit of smelly plastic-type smoke. I've had it towed, haven't heard from the garage yet; but a friendly guy who stopped to help me reckoned it was the auxiliary drivebelt (drives the water pump, power steering etc). Does anybody know if fitting a new one is a straightforward job for a garage; and will its breaking have done any damage to the engine? Thanks

If it was only the Auxiliary, no, if Cam Belt, Yes.

The garage has fixed the car, and it was the aux drive belt (no damage to the engine, they said). They replaced the belt (£20), but it also needed two idlers, which as far as I can find out are to do with tensioning the belt, which goes round lots of cranks and pulleys. My question is: why was one of these idlers £25 and one £72 ? Thanks
