Thinking of buying one, can anyone recommend a good make, with a good quality picture, medium price please, any advice about them would be great. I plan to charge it up between trips like a mobile phone rather than wire it inside the car, too fiddly for me. And do I have to buy a memory stick as well? Thanks all

All the ones I've seen only run for a few minutes when not connected to a power source, so that's going to make it tricky for you.
I bought this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00F5WPB2K?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

with which I've been very pleased but has since been updated.

I bought it with GPS because I like toys and also with some internal memory, which is a waste of time. It's small enough to leave in the car without being obvious to passers-by, gives good quality HD pictures and will record for about 6 hours on a 32GB card.
It will have to be plugged in to the socket at least.
Have you thought of downloading an app. In the App Store there are quite a few some free some 79p upwards.
I have used my iPad as a CCTV outside my house to catch the person whose dog was poohing everyday. It worked.

Sycamore, that sounds good. I am not technical at all, which would you recommend and what do I do, how Long does it work before battery runs out etc ? Thanks everyone as always
Not sure which one but I did read the details for 'Falco' which is free that I thought sounded good. But just type dashboard camera into the search box in the App Store and quite a few pop up. I don't know how long the battery lasts but I have a plug that goes into the cigarette lighter and connects to my iPad. My car is old (but still goes like a dream) I think now newer cars have usb ports.
A phone would running that sort of app would drain the batteries very quickly, it still needs to be plugged in.
I wonder how you're going to prop your ipad/phone on the dashboard?
bhg, you buy a special mount so the phone would be attached in the same way as a dashcam.
I have experimented using my iphone on video mode, connected to the cig lighter.. I bought a windscreen mount that didnt obscure the lens. It works fine. You just have to keep deleting the footage thats a small drawback.
