The ability to think ahead.
You have to anticipate.

Don't break the Speed Limits!

Constantly think ahead, pre-empt what could/may happen.
Think & say to yourself this mantra "I could die in this vehicle today" (my instructor told me this one!).
Concentration, anticipation, skill, attitude (the right one) and knowledge.

That's an understatement by someone a while back was doing the Ton in Kent????
Treat every other driver on the road as if they are idiots. You'll be right 90% of the time. Always expect the unexpected.
Many people drive well for 99% of the time and become idiots for the remaining 1%. I guess a good driver drives well all the time.
Don't rush.

My driving instructor told me to drive like I had the Queen in the back seat.

Keep your distance, no sudden braking, no racing another car off the lights...
Don't wish to blow my own trumpet here but I would say the answers already given are SPOT ON.
Add patience to anticipation as well as judgement. Know the capabilities of the vehicle you are driving and particularly it's dimension.

Ex Class 1 Advanced Motorcyclist
HGV Class 2
PCV Class 1
Advanced anti- Ambush and Evasion Skills.
Read the prevailing road surface and conditions as well. Can't go far wrong!!!! :-)

I'm an extremely bad passenger, to the point at times I feel sick. My OH though is the only driver I feel safe with...although I still put my foot on the non existent brakes..

TWR. In your apparent extensive and varied driving career how many claims have you made for road traffic collisions ?

Note I use police terminology (collisions, not accidents. )
