Sirens
I encountered a fast driver at a roundabout on my way to work. A strange repetitive siren which swooped upwards only, followed by three rapid beeps, seemed to emanate from the car.
Could it be a new emergency services siren in an unmarked emergency response unit?
I did not see any other signs on the car (although the front car grille, where there are 'hidden blue lights' was not visible to me) as I was too close to the car.
The car driver pressed his horn after we had almost collided.

I was under the distinct impression that emergency service vehicles (including doctors and blood transportation vehicles) are not allowed to operate their audible warning without having their lights flashing.
Also unmarked police cars when operating their lights becomes extremely noticeable (lights in the front bumper grill and mounted in the rear of the vehicle above the back window).
I also thought that doctors vehicles had to be fully marked (front, side and rear) with green and white and by UK law must display at top box with green flashing lights.

Some informative and amusing answers. I was driving through a holiday resort at the time and going past amusement arcades, so initially thought that the sound was coming from one of these 'Halls of Pleasure'!
Five minutes later I heard more conventional sirens, so on reflection, I think it must have been an emergency response unit.
