Someone once told me that it is illegal to stick racing or rally style numbers on a car that is driven on the road.   Is that true, and if so, why?

not illegal at all. Infact the new Beetle has a "Herbie" limited edition. Think it has "59" on bonnet and each door.

PS Can't be bothered to do a google search on Herbie to get the right number!!!!!!

NO = Why would it be

but I bet you get stopped more

beetles have 53 on it ,thats ok as it comes manufactured like it, but on other vehicles the number has to have a line thru it as though its crossed out
I see plenty of lorries and trucks with numbers on - and courtesy cars and minicabs with numbers on. Unless somebody can PROVE otherwise I dont think they can stop you having numbers etc on your car. What are they going to do - tell you what colour to have it next.
I work at VW, and you can have a number 53 put on the new Beetle as a factory option, but I also have a friend who does the Gumball Rally, and he has to have the number crossed out when he's not racing like Greggo says. I have no idea why one is ok and the other not?
