The hours,
Working Conditions,
Abuse,
the list goes on Tilly.

Theres hundreds of jobs like that.

It's not a worthless job but it can be a thankless one.

Some truckers do get paid more than £60k a year but they have extra qualifications such as hazardous waste transport.

Who's been kidding you HC? there was some young lad somewhere in the UK doing nights in Tesco, the money he was earning doubled that of the Del Drivers that went in there delivering. I was in the Industry for quite a few years & I think I know a bit.
I've asked you this question before TWR, and it has never been answered, why do you refer to Stobart drivers as 'Glory Boys'?
need korrys if want stuff in shops, houses built, move house etc
I didn't say £60k is the average but there are HGV driver jobs that pay that sort of money
Question Author
Sorry if I did not reply Eccles, Stobarts employed drivers that they could manipulate, " I will give you a new wagon if you rush" I heard the story's, I've been in their company & heard it all, my right arm was brown from years of graft in the Job with hand loading anything that you could handle, the meaning of that, I did not have my arm on the drivers door, the job then entailed helping other drivers including the Motorist's, now they have not got time to fart.

///the job then entailed helping other drivers including the Motorist///

What Haulier would pay you for doing that, just out of curiosity?
I'm still at a loss to understand why why you call them Glory Boys. That terms implies, to me at least, a level of self entitlement, yet you describe a work ethos of subservience and slavedom.

I often used to help the motorist Baldric, persons with flat Tyres etc, it was a part of the job, the Bosses never used to contact you unless there was a serious Issue, they let you get on with it, now they phone you up with, Where are you, how long will it take you, they phoned you 20 mins previously, Taco's ( I totally agree with the taco ) I have done a run years back for an urgent del in London only to be told " Park Up driver" you are Silent Checked, Camera checked, Police checked, M.O. Trasport , Derv Checked, In other word Eccles, they did not like to get their hands Dirty.
My BIL is a HGV driver, he is late thirties, earns 40K+ and gets most Saturday and Sunday's off - not a bad deal!
I'm still none the wiser but it sounds like you are best out of a trade that doesn't suit you.
Question Author
After 40 years I've done my whack.
TWR...why did you stick at it for 40 years if you hated it so much?
Question Author
The job had changed for the worse, Rip off Parking charges, Transport Clerks that's never done the job pushing you, Fines for going over your time by 5mins, Yes 5mins and a possible £1000 fine, the list is endless Bright.
What would you do if you were 18 again?
Question Author
Join the Forces.
Many of your listed issues apply to the forces.
Question Author
There was no chance of the forces asking you to run Bent Bright & put the public at risk, I would & never have run bent for no Haulage Employer, this concludes my reasons.
