the engine warning light on my 2002 diesel focus was flickering on i took it to an auto electrics centre and they told me it was the fuel pump. the car runs fine so why should i need to replace the pump?

Sounds to me as if they are trying to rip you off.

If the car is running OK take it to another garage - a more reputable one - and get them to reset the ECU.

May have to be a main dealer or if you have a decent service manual you could do it yourself.

I'm not familiar with Fords but I've done a reset before on Vauxhalls and Volvos.

If the light comes back on, then you perhaps have a genuine fault.

there is an issue with the dci engine as fitted to the mondeo but this does present with a misfire. if the engine is running and starting fine then its  probably  an engine management software problem. no other way around it than find someone who knows and is'nt just guessing. i agree with billy, even if you have the pump changed it's the ecu that's putting the warning lamp on.rip off entirely possible.
