Mot Advisory Reasonable Cost?

My daughter has a little Peugeot 107. Had MOT last week and passed with one new tyre required. The following advisories were listed. 1. Remove and refit arm front suspension, upper assembly wishbone left. £133.66. 2. Ditto above but wishbone right. £133.66. 3. Remove and refit anti roll stabiliser brushes front suspension. £227.26. Total cost £494.58. Before we agree to have the work done by this garage, does anyone with the knowledge of what is involved give an opinion on whether these cost are reasonable. We thought we may check other garages but if the cost is roughly the same, it would save the bother.

Sounds like the garage is touting for work .

As they are 'advisories' only they don't need doing yet; so take your time and shop around.

As the Captain says, these are advisories only and are meant to indicate that there is some wear that is not serious but will need attention at some time. The vehicle passed its MOT and has been certified as safe at the time of the test.
Garages with MOT testing bays will quite often seize any opportunity to get work ( 'touting' as Bazile calls it). I think it best to use an MOT testing station only, and then get quotes from workshops elsewhere if necessary.

TWR £100 labour that's only 2 hours work - do you think they could do that work in 2 hours? I don't!!

Is the car old and of low value? If so consider driving it for a year and scrapping it before next MOT, or trading it in during the year.

Firstly, thank you all for your answers. The car is 2010 only 58,000 miles on it Hopkirk, she has only had it a year as she is on a very limited budget, all she could afford. Yes TWR it is right, I copied exactly what it said on the mot certificate, but thank you for going to the trouble to give your informative answer. I don't know anyone who could fit even if I got the parts. I think we will try a couple of other garages, I don't mind paying for a job well done but I hate being ripped off. Cheers to you all.

Rather than tell another garage what is wrong - why not ask them to carry out a pre mot and see if it comes up with the same issues, if it does then you know they need doing - if it doesn't then you have saved some money.

Foxy, if you go onto Google and type in your Car's needs, State the repair, it will come up with Private Mechanics that will come out and do the Job at your home, get quotes from one or three of them, then price match, you have 1 Year to sort this out so do not be pushed, this is an advisory so you can look around, good luck but be cautious.

Don't know about your area, foxyferret but in my local council area they do MOT's ( I always have my cars MOTed there ). If your local council offer this service I would advise having it re- MOTed there, they do not do repairs so they are not touting for repair business.
It would be interesting to see if they gave the same advisories.

Advisories do not mean the car is is any way unsafe. The next test may not even mention them. I had two items noted on my car and as I was doing high mileage at the time I asked for a date to fix them but they said they were ok for now, just reportable. These same items were on and off the test cert for a few years, and one of them was never done....
