The email address is a genuine AA address (or appears to be) and the number's certainly a genuine AA number.

The AA are currently saying it's a fake email, but it's more likely that either they've been hacked or that the emails are the result of a mistake.

Almost certainly a scam. Are you an a member? If not they wouldn't have your email. If so, log on and see if anything has changed. No name will also mean it is a scam. They can spoof the a email address, sometimes even in the headers but you may spot the real sender's address.

You dont need to be 'hacked' to have this sort of thing happen.

Never click on any link from any email. Always go to the known secure web site and use phone numbers/links from there.

There's no link to click on and only the genuine phone number given, so I wonder what the trap is other than to get you to log in on to the website (if its been hacked) and reveal your password. I shall stay away for now.

We are aware of an email being sent to members regarding a change of password on their accounts. We advise customers not to ring the number provided within the email. We are looking into this matter urgently and will provide further information as soon as it becomes available.

Maybe it's an attempt at a denial of phoneline by someone who's not keen on the AA ?

I too have received this email on Sunday (25/06/17) @ 20:38.

This doesn't look to be a hack or a scam. I checked the email header and the supplied address (The AA ) is a valid email for The AA and hasn't been spoofed.

The email contents itself doesn't contain any links and the phone number provided is a valid The AA customer services email.

I also tried to log into my The AA online account online and found that the service is down, as is the password reset service. I also tried ringing the number but it was engaged, no doubt due to a number of people doing the same.

As a number of people have reported the exact same issue, and the lack of malicious content in the emails, we can assume that The AA are experiencing some technical difficulties and that the email sent to a number of users is genuinely from The AA, but sent in error. Probably from some IT work going on over the weekend (I've work in IT for many years, this stuff happens quite a lot). We'll just have to wait until the login\password reset system is back up or until The AA issue a statement on the issue to verify.

Or the spoof email has had the intended denial of service outcome because people are trying to ring AA or email them or log on to check

The website outage could be due to increased traffic due to this issue, but it's working for me and when I did my own ping it was responding as expected.

I advise that you do not attempt to log into your account until an official statement has been issued by The AA. Although everything looks legit (correct address, no spoofing, no links, correct phone number) there is a possibility that it could be a "login trap" where a 3rd party hijacks a genuine site and can intercept login attempts to capture login information. I personally think this to be unlikely, but to be safe wait for the official response from The AA.

I rang the number indicated & a member of the team agreed to meet me in the park with a bottle, it turned out to be Alco Anonymous.
