the speed was reduced temporarily around 45 years ago. I wonder if there were ant accident stats and also how relevant they would be?
Yes, of course it will, but its not going to happen IMHO.
Unfortunately they type of driver who causes the majority of accidents will not be influenced by speed limits, they obey few rules of the road anyway. When we lived in Germany during Summer HGVs were banned from the autobahns from late Friday until about 10pm in Sunday which greatly reduced hold ups when there was a large volume of traffic heading off on holiday. I don't know if it's still the same today.
HGVs speed is limited by law, car drivers by a lack of ability.

The A9 (Killer Road!!) is currently covered by average speed cameras from Dunblane to Inverness with a trial speed limit of 50mph for HGVs, clearly signposted every few miles in both text and picture form.
This does not stop Joe Dawdle in his Kia tootling along at 48, doing his upright citizen bit to keep those devils in lorries in their place having failed or refusing to recognise the signage and not knowing that the national limit for cars, 60mph, still applies.
When these keepers of the queen's speed are abed or at home flagellating themselves everything works just fine.

Humans are the problem, not machines.

There are compelling arguments for raising the Limit to at least 80.
But at the same time let's keep those annoying HGVs in their place with a limit, of lets say 60, in the left hand Lane, and if they can't maintain 60 then stay off the motorway altogether.
No.
