Well the faster you're going the more likely you are to lose control, crash and die.
Are speed limits being reduced?
No - it would be a disaster if cars were reduced to the same speed as HGVs - a recipe for accidents.
i'm pretty sure that the people who drive on the motorway at 80+ will continues to do so whatever the limit

It'll just bring in more revenue from those fed up with being overly controlled. Along with comments from some about how the financial demands from the State on those who progress at a reasonable pace are somehow voluntary. Why not go the whole hog and apply a 5mph limit on all roads and revenue cameras every 5 yards ?
would help if HGVs were confined to inside lane as they are in much of Europe...no overtaking..spray kept away from cars in wet weather.. visibility of other vehicles clear etc etc

Would cause more chaos than ever Murray, think of slip roads Off / On, if the HGV's were confined to the inside lane, when the limit was 60mph, there was never the bunching like it is today.
I would echo Naomi's post. Is this a proposal or have you just made it up TWR?
The way HGV's behave on the motorway is disgusting!! Overtaking each other and holding others up - thought they were restricted in the speed they could do?
In answer to your question NO!
seems to work well in Europe when I have been on motorways though TWR !
I've misses an exit on a German Autobahn - long uphill gradient. reduced to speed of slowest, bunch up, not enough gap to get between them for my exit.

There was a clip in the Mirror this morning regarding reducing the speed to 60mph.
Worth pointing out that motorways are one of the safest road types already, anyway. Cars are better made than when motorways were first built: speed limits should have increased to reflect that. Drivers treat them as if they were anyway.
It's been in other papers too. I saw it in the Mail, I think, the other day but I can't find the article now to give a link. A suggestion by some MPs in an attempt to reduce pollution.
bhg, driven on the continent loads of time and never had an issue with the exits.
The reduction suggestion was reported days ago. Hopefully will be slung out.
No. Why would people slow down because the limit became 60 rather than 70? They'd carry on doing 90+. Perhaps we need more police on the motorways.
When motorways were first introduced few cars could do 70mph (there was no limit then, anyway). I remember an advertisement for the Renault Dauphine bragging that it would do 70mph.
HGV's should be restricted to the slow lane and restricted from overtaking unless there is a reason for it ie avoid an accident.

The Motorways are the safest roads O.G. It's the people that do not know how to use them.
