44 Tonners very close to each other! I'd tried not to do this when I was on the road for obvious reasons, it takes the Truck a while to stop due to the load / Weight you were carrying, the same applies when you were Empty, with the brakes Applied they would lock up & you would still travel in a skid, I think it should become Law that HGV's be 2 Length's apart when travelling, this may be hard to comply with the volume of traffic & drivers cutting you up to get off at a Junction but it can be implemented, I also think that dash cam recordings should be used in a court of law to prosecute, I've had cars coming from the Outside lane right across me & others because they have miscalculated their Junction, the reason for this comment, that accident on the M1, apart from this Drink issue, I'm sure that these HGVs were travelling to close for this carnage to happen, what's your views?

If HGVs were two lengths apart smaller vehicles would just nip in between them.
We'll have automated fleets soon and they have to travel close together.

My views is HGV drivers are dangerous and don't care about anything else on the road - the are selfish and need taking in hand more often.

I think it's madness but they seem determined to go ahead with it.
Right so driving close to each other - overtaking each other causing holds up and potential accidents are all part of the job are they TWR?
How long ago did you drive these lorries?
How does one cause a Potential accident?

I was on the motorway in England a couple of weeks ago and was cut up on 6 occasions by HGV's - the roads were not that busy but they decided to pull out into the middle lane without indicators to overtake the HGV infront of them!
Then when we moved onto a minor road approaching a roundabout did not slow down or indicate!
Probably immigrants.

Don't tar all HGV drivers with the same brush Islay. My husband is an HGV driver and is very good at it. He spent 33 years in the Amy before this and he knows what he's doing and is a very safe and courteous driver. They are not all the same!
Aren't they fitted with 'governors' (??) which means they cannot exceed a certain speed?
Being stuck behind one in the outside lane of a dual carriage way as it tries to overtake the one on the inside lane, climbing a hill, is no fun.
Few would nip in for the "fun" of being sandwiched between two HGVs. It'd be of "necessity" when desperate to find a gap allowing them to use the upcoming exit.

2 lengths seems a reasonable suggestion, but I wonder how it'd be policed. It would only really apply when one chooses to follow another in front. Forcing one to go at the rate of the slowest HGV doesn't seem like a goer to me. And it is the blocking two lanes whilst overtaking over miles that is a pain for other users. But I guess that's a different issue.
Kathyan I am sure there is an odd decent one out there - I have the same argument with one of my BIL - he admits they are arrogant drivers who feel they own the road.
PS you get good and bad HGV drivers, the same as you get good and bad family saloon drivers.

they don’t “decide” – if they’re hard behind a slower moving truck they won’t slow down because it costs too much. So regardless of what’s to their right, they WILL pull out. Car drivers need to be alert to this and be looking well ahead - if 2 truck seem scarily close together, give them a wide berth.
"Costs to much" ! That's still a decision. Apparently a decision to drive without due care.
