When you tax your car, you have to supply insurance details - I am buying a new car on Tueday but am worried that the covernote will not come through in time. I have an insurance document for my other car which covers me to drive any vehicle 3rd party. Will this suffice for the post office?

The DVLA rules for relicensing a car state:

Valid Insurance Certificate (UK) - It must cover liability to third parties, be valid on the date the license comes into force, and indicate that it covers the use of the vehicle by the vehicle keeper. If the cover is unclear you may be asked to provide written confirmation.
ok, my tax was due 1st october...... so was my blooming insurance - only had the car a month. i actually rang up the dvla as i was worried, i went 4 days without tax and was told i was driving around illegally, the car must either be taxed or kept off road or you will be fined as it is computerised now. i went that day to the insurance office and picked up a cover note in person so i could tax the car.

Just in case anyone is still interested - I received my insurance documents this morning and have taxed an collected my car.

Thanks everyone

Problem solved!

Enjoy your holiday.

I enjoy reading advice given on this site, and to this question, but no one has mentioned, if you have no Road Tax or MOT, it also means that your insurance is also void. If you have neither any of these individual certificates, it cancel out the others.

Happy motoring.
