renault clio drive shafts

my son borrowed my car, the car would not go from 2nd to 3rd gear and then lost power. The man who helped heim push the car off the road was a macanic and he said that the drive shaft had come out and hit the gear box causing it to fracture. the car need a new gear box and 2 drive shafts but the garage have said this is not a mechanical fault and he must have ran over something which my son insists he did not. Has anyone else heard on this problem as the man said it was a common fault with clio's
