Yes, I do. I should like to know on what basis the police officers will stop a driver. Does the driver have to have committed an offence, or will drivers be stopped at random? The news item does not give those details.

I thought it used to be 22 yards. Sticks in the mind as it's the length of a cricket pitch (aka a chain, tenth of a furlong, eightieth of a mile, etc).

22 yards is 20.11 metres so almost exactly the same as now.

And yes, I should hope I satisfy the requirements, otherwise I really should not be driving! I find the requirements alarmingly easy ...

Totally agree with this and think it should be UK wide not just for England. I refuse to go any distance in a friend's car as she needs glasses for driving but doesn't wear them. Says she's lost them!

In the Motor Vehicle (Driver Licences) Regulations of 1937 the required distance was 25 yards or 75ft. In 1971, to reflect a change in number plate size, the distance was amended to 67 feet (20.5 Metres).

Although the requirement to read a number plate at a distance of 20m came into force in 2003 this did not represent a change in standard but was as a result of the font size on the new number plate.

With most drivers needing to renew their licence every 10 years, perhaps the application should be accompanied by a recent eyesight test.
