hi i'm part exchanging my car this week for another. How do you get tax before driving the car away nowadays?

Tilly, unfortunately the tax cannot be transferred to the new owner.

get the reference number of the green slip (V5C/2)from the vendor , then use this site:
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax

and bear in mind that if you want to tax it before 1st August you will have to buy tax for the whole of July.

bednobs, get the V5C(2) number from the seller then tax it as I said above before you collect, if you can wait till 1st August you'll save a months tax.
