Just looking to renew my car insurance and apparently
Some insurers reduce your premium when you provide your driving licence number.

Why would they do this? There must be some benefit to them

So they can actually look up your accident / claim record rather than just accepting what you tell them ! They need to have the actual Licence number as there are very often many people with similar or even the same name ! Think just how many 'Tom Smith's' there are for example !!

Further to my answer I remember an actual example ! At one time I started to get very high car insurance quotes ! I asked why ! Turned out that some one with the same name as me had a series of high value accident claims !
Wow!
