Petrol Smell
8 Answers
I filled the car up earlier and spilled some petrol on my hand and coat. I bought a bottle of water in the patrol station and rinsed my hand, but it didn’t do much. The smell in the car in the way home was awful. I’ve washed the coat which is now smell free, but I’m having trouble getting it off my hands. I’ve washed them so many times that I think I’m going to make them raw soon. Any ideas on what I can use to clean the petrol smell off.

White vinegar is probably the best ( re) solution.

My very first job, part-time, was on petrol pumps when I was still at school - holidays and weekends. The times I got covered in petrol and paraffin were profuse. Many years ago you could buy motor oil for your car in a gallon tin with a screw on lid and people would use these tins for collecting paraffin. Nobody at the garage warned me of "blow back" from the nozzle and one day I was trying to decant the liquid into the tin with gusto. This resulted in a shower of paraffin exiting the tin at great velocity all over my head, in my eyes and generally getting drenched. Now that did sting!
I am glad the vinegar cured one problem for you. Maybe keep some CSI gloves for next time you top up?
