I have read reports claiming that you should use A/C regularly or it can lead to problems. I have climate control on my car, so never turn off the A/C and I've had 14 years trouble-free usage so far, with a service every 4 years or so.
If the AC is not used regularly the seals in the system dry up (the gas circulating lubricates them) and so the gas escapes.
Yes it should be run regularly, even in winter.

yes the seals go and the gas leaks out, use regularly, you don't have to have it on cold.
While the comments are true 18 months is ridiculously short. If it is still cooling, I would suspect you are right that they are charging for unnecessary work.
my car ac is only run to clear the screen in winter and its only been recharged once in 12 years still works icy cold, your been taken for a ride Ian
