But technology has advanced. Engines have improved and plugs, plug leads, electronics etc are more than capable of surviving the damp Brittish winters.....providing your car is looked after.
Having said that, you will do no harm giving everything a weekly or monthly squirt and i always carry a can of WD with me in the car.
