Oil Level On A Dipstick

If the oil level is 10mm over the maximum level on a dipstick which measures 45mm from the tip to the maximum mark is this anything to worry about or should the excess be drained off.

You'll be ok. I often used to overshoot the mark. You'll soon use it up.

Modern cars really don't like the oil level to be over "max". My handbook has the warning..."if the oil level is above area A, do not start the engine. Damage to the engine or catalytic converter could occur". Area A is a lot less than 1 cm above "max".

Once the engine starts, with the amount of oil circulating around the engine, the level of oil in the sump will reduce to a normal level.

Many years ago when it was common to have petrol pump attendants, a colleague recalled that he used to work in a petrol station and made a fortune in commission from oil sales. While filling the vehicle he would ask if he could check the engine oil level. With the engine having just stopped and the oil not yet returned to the sump – he was able to convince many drivers that they needed an unnecessary top-up at an extortionate cost.
