We have a static 8 berth caravan on a site in Dorset. We've been expecting electric and gas bills to come in. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, management thought our electric bill too low and are looking into it! They told my husband they would get back to him, which they haven't yet. They haven't said how much it was though. I just wondered, can they legally do this, say, they estimate what they think it should be?..

If I was you I'd get onto the management and ask what the reading they're questioning is, and what do they mean 'looking into it'. How does the reading compare to same time last year for instance. It may be that the meter is faulty, which you would need to know.

Ive no idea about the legalities, but I'd want to know more detail if I was you. Are they reasonable people to deal with?

My husband just said, they told him it was a lot lower than last year. He should have asked more questions..

'Are they reasonable to deal with?'  On most things, yes, but when it comes to the money side of things.. ???

surely there is a meter reading for the place? I don't see how they have arrived at what appears to be an opinion.

Would it make sense to you that it's lower, as in have you used it less? Or if you rent it out, have you had fewer renters? Or have you changed any appliances which would use less electricity??

Lower isn't so much of a problem as higher, I'd have thought. Good luck Patsy.

I assume that the site owners own and maintain the electricty meters and cables within the park, not the electricity company that supplies the management.

If that is the case then they allowed to investigate your meter readings and meter.

What period are they querying?  If you don't live in the caravan full time, was it used a lot less than the previous year?

TTT, yes, there is a meter. Obviously, their people come out to read it. We can't always be there, being quite a long way from site. It just doesn't seem right, because they say it seems too low..

Not sure Barry. Some people are out and about quite a bit, some stay inside a lot.

is the reading low as well as the cost? It's the amount that is used is what really should be compared not the cost.

You must have an idea of occupancy though, Patsy, whether you had more empty weeks than previously.   Is it the whole year or just the past month/quarter that he says is low?

My husband will ring tomorrow. He actually rang this morning and was told, they're still looking into it. I'll let you know, when we find out, TTT.

We have a bill twice a year, Barry. So the last half, summer - winter. We were reasonably booked last year. Probably about the same as last year. My husband sorts the bookings, bills etc.

in these days of super soaraway power bills, anything low will seem odd, so I'd probably be looking into it too. Still, I would have thought you could ask the figures.

Jno, my husband deals with everything. They didn't tell him what the reading was and he didn't ask. Anyway, he's ringing them in the morning to ask if it's been sorted, then maybe get some information.

My husband keeps ringing office, at caravan park re -electric bill, but nobody available to talk to him! Why the hell don't they just posting the reading and take it from there?

Well, at last!

OH had an email today, with the electric bill for caravan. £110. He was very happy with that! I think it was almost double last time. They took their time about it..
