first gear has gone on my 94 golf driver..


can this be replaced without major expensive repair

Has it gone, or is it the lnkage needs realigning? I am not familair with your car, but imagine it would be easier to get a recon/2nd hand box than get it repaired. Either way the box has to come out.
Replaced - yes
Without major expensive repair - not bl***y likely!
It depends where you go for the repair (and parts) you could chance a low mileage one from a breakers for about �50, and get it fitted by a garage, if you or any of your friends know a mechanic personally it would be alot cheaper too. A friend of mine changed a box for �40.
