Most cars are FWD and if the tyres haven't been rotated it's the front tyres that need replacing. A lot of garages will replace the front tyres and not swap the wheels front to back cos it's less bother.

If your car comes with a spare (and not a space-saver), and it is new/unused, you only need buy one new tyre; have the best of the tyres you are replacing reserved as your spare.

Not many cars come with a spare (or can be specced with one) that is identical to the other four wheels.

I specced a spare with my new car...it wasn't a "space-saver" as such, but wasn't the same as the other four...and had a steel (rather than alloy) wheel.

If the spare wheel/tyre dimensions are the same, you could have the garage swap off the new spare tyre and replace it with a removed tyre.

Not worth the hassle, imo!

TTT will tell you tyres are cheap - if they aren't at their best just replace them all!

The garage swaps the tyres over for you, they should do it for a nominal fee (including balancing) – such a move could easily save you £100 or more.

15:45 well yes motoring overall is too cheap and that includes tyres but I didn't engage this thread on that basis.

...and yet...

@16.28...yes, I know the garage does it for you and there's a "nominal" charge (or not so nominal these days)...but I'm not fussed over £100, thanks.

It gets more complicated if the wheel has a tyre pressure sensor fitted, as switching between front and back can mean you get incorrect information.

Gee..  when the tyres wear down replace them! simples mun..

What is probably more important is buying quality tyres not budget ones.
