If it was fully comp it would be a motor traders policy - but you usually have to prove that you have trade premises.

Thanks tubeway for your answer, but I think what I am trying to figure out is, when taking out insurance is it the car that being insured or the driver ie They say what year of manifacture, value, type (saloon or van) all relating to the vehicle, then it states the policy holder can drive any car not belonging to him, ie a friends, so we say you have a car that is insured third party and its at home locked up in your garage. you are downtown and you meet your friend who cannot drive home for some reason and asks you to, how do you stand with law?
I suspect that you would need to own a car, on paper at least. Could you not get hold of a reg. document for a car and insure that. I suppose now you would have to register the car sorn.If you want some documents I suppose you could have the ones for my off road car seen as it will never see the road again! if your'e interested post message here .P.S.this is legal by the way!

Thankyou for your answers I dont want to drive thankyou, I drove for many years (accident free I might add) and still hold a very clean licence, being lucky enough not have been involed in a accident. I never really had to deal with insurance companies other than to renew it. It's since i sorter stop driving that I have had time to think how one stands if i was asked to drive someones car for them, Thanks again for your intrest in my question.
No insurance Company would really want to provide this cover, reasons being that they would not be able to assess the risk and therefore unable to quote you a premium - one day you could be driving a standard family saloon, the next day some top of the range sports model for example - if you drive a car not belonging to yourself (legally :-)) then you need to be insured under the owners insurance as "ANY Driver (Holding a valid licence to drive)" otherwise you need your own car Insurance extended for you to drive other vehicles (which goes back to square one as there's no car involved) - sorry this is a bit vague, but I think it would be a non-starter.
