On the new Jaguar XK, what difference do the different size wheels make to the drive. Is it worth paying an extra 2,000 ($3,500) for 20" wheels.

It's a commonly held thought that wheels look better than tyres.

Ergo, if you have big wheels, the tyre will be of a lower-profile than a standard wheel. This can look good but it does change the handling characteristics of the car.

A low profile tyre is 'stiffer' than a standard profile tyre. You will notice this in two ways:

- in cornering it will feel like the car is on rails
- you will get a less supple ride and you'll feel the bumps in the road more

Is it worth paying extra for big wheels? Do you want the XK to be a sports car or a GT? If you want sporty handling go for the big wheels, but if you want a continent crusher, don't bother.
