Hi

The first things to check are the ignition and fuel systems! Do the basics first like plugs, leads etc and check the gap on your contact breaker points!

Does it rev high??- is it just losing drive or will the engine just not go over a certaing rev limit?

Try changing to second gear.

Seriously though, this could be many things. does the engine idle OK, if yes then probably the ignition is OK and also things like the valves and piston rings, If it is an older type mini (you didn't say the age) it might have an SU type carburetor which looks like this, with these the piston inside the carb can get stuck and give the symptom you mention, refer to that picture and remove items 2 and 22 and anything else that come off with it, clean everything and make sure that the piston moves easily up and down the chamber, re-assemble and then put engine oil in the small reservoir at the top under the plastic cap. try it now.
