I am considering a dual fuel car, but have been told (by a rather unreliable source) that the cost of LPG will soar as the government cashes in on fuel duty. Anyone know if this is true?

Nope only Gordon Brown knows if this is true.

However it has been widely predicted for at least three or four years now so if such an obvious source of revenue has been ignored for so long they must want to encourage people to move to it quite a lot.

Given how few LPG cars there are as compared to Petrol and diesel I'd say you're probably safe from fuel duty for a few years yet

Yes, as above, It's an irony that the government is encouraging LPG usage but if people start to use it in large numbers then they will respond by increasing taxation! Not for a few years yet though.

sorry, i hate to go against the grain here, i do honestly believe that the price of lpg will be on par with petrol and diesel within 2-3 years. i hope i am wrong but i remember it being about .25 per litre, its more like .45 per litre now!!

LPG is the government's "Green Thing" and they only keep the duty low because they know that the high cost of converting makes it a non starter for many motorist. If everyone drove LPG cars, they would double the tax over night. We all know that the motorist is the golden egg laying goose, as we all love our cars that much we will pay almost anything.
If I invented a magical ingredient to fuel a car on water that also had zero emissions, do we think that Gordon would let us get away with that.........no way! Gordon wants as much of your money as he can get and he will tax almost anything he can to get it. The more you want it, the higher the tax
I have run two, twenty year old cars on LPG for years. I am happy with the way things are. The number of garages stocking LPG is good, but not too many motorist converting to have Gordon intrested.

Remember that a litre of LPG has a much lower calorific value than a litre of petrol or deisel so you cannot compare by price. The savings are not that good and hardly justify the conversion costs. A deisel is much more economical and even better if you use low taxed vegetable oil, that's the way to go.

The car I am considering is already converted, so that cost won't apply, but thanks for the advice!
