Why does it still cost so much to hook your car up to those diagnostic computers in garages?? I know the machines were very expensive when they first started to appear about 10 years ago!! But surely they have long since been paid for? So why still the extortionate price just to plug it into your car???

One of the reasons is that some Dealer garages are now charging hourly mechanics rates at a higher rate than Lawyers do! Also the diagnostic computers need updating every time a new model comes out.

Depends on the garage. Where I work we charge �15 to see what the cars memory holds. Its covers 15 minutes labour which is the smallest time increment we allow for.
