I have a 1999 Ford Focus Zetec 1.8 (petrol) with a starting problem. It happened yesterday - ignition comes on with all the usual clicking, but no sound from the starter (or anywhere else) when the ignition key is fully turned. Returned to the car two hours later and it started fine and has done so a couple of times since.

The battery is a month old and the battery voltage is good (12.8V with everything off), battery connections fine.

First thing you want to check are the connections on your starter motor. It's located next to the gearbox end of the sump (looks like this http://talking-dog.com/forsale/display/PDRM0017.JPG).

If it happens again.. Try selecting 2nd gear, release the handbrake and 'rock' the car back and forth (keeping one foot over the brake). This moves the transmission slightly and can help the motor engage the teeth on the flywheel.

That's about as much as I can tell you. If you still have problems. You should contact a garage. Hope it's just the connections though.

Thanks Mudman, I'll have a good look around. I would have taken it to the garage but it's only happened the once. They might just change components (at cost!) because they can't find a problem.
i will tell you a little trick and tthis will not damage your car get a hammer and give the starter motor a couple of wacks but not to hard
