MK 1 VW Golf

Hi, I have a MK1 Golf convertable 1983, which is in immaculate original condition, My problem is the windscreen wipers, they are useless, I have stripped the mecanism and cleaned and lubricated it with copper grease, motor works fine, but they are slow, and hardly any difference between the speeds, will a set up from a MK 2 golf fit as i must keep it all original, any help would be appreciated, Also are the brakes crap on these?
