Not really sure where to put this but does anyone know if it's technically possible to be prosecuted for speeding on a bicycle? Obviously they couldn't give points etc because you don't need a licence but could you be fined? Obviously speed cameras could catch you but a real live copper could. There are several hills round my way and I can regularly get up to 40+ in a 30, any ideas anyone?
not sure. would think so. you can get done for being drunk on one, and have problems with your driving licence i think, though that's a technicality and unlikely to happen (as far as i know anyway)
A cyclist can be prosecuted for cycling in a dangerous manner under the Road Traffic Act
Cycling offences and cycle racing
28 Reckless cycling.
29 Careless, and inconsiderate, cycling.
30 Cycling when under influence of drink or drugs.
31 Regulation of cycle racing on public ways.
32 Electrically assisted pedal cycles..
It would be difficult to prosecute for the offence of speeding as generally bicycles are not equipped with speedometers.
My father was stopped by the police for overtaking them in a 30 zone, they couldn't do anything really. I think they were just impressed, he was 55 at the time and it was on the flat!
I was fined 75 for cycling in a pedestrian area in Portsmouth 8 years ago - this was about a month before being caught at 85MPH on the M27 (in my car !!) and being fined 40 !!!!!
