For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.you will only get asked questions on 40,50,60,70 mph. read the question carefully as they will ask for braking distances(BD) or overall stopping distance(OSD). i will try and make it as simple as possible for you. first you need a scale. start the scale at 40mph and multiply this figure by 3. this will give you the OSD at 40=120 ft. if you get a braking distance question you must do the sum for overall stopping distance the subtract the spped you are doing.
40 x 3 = 120 OSD -40 = 80 BD
for every 10 mph more increase the multiplication by an additional half. ie
50 x 3 1/2 =175 OSD - 50= 125 BD
60 x 4 =240 OSD - 60 = 180 BD
70 x 4 1/2 = 315 OSD - 70 = 245 BD
these answers are in feet. on the test the answers are in feet and metres. all the best i hope you understand it.

Easy way to remember. Total stopping distance = Thinking distance + Braking distance.
Thinking distance in feet, is the same as the mph (eg 30mph = 30 feet)
Braking Distance: Take the first number of the mph, divide by 2, then multiply by the mph.( eg 50mph. 5/2 = 2.5 , 2.5x50 = 125feet)
So at 60mph
Thinking = 60 feet
Braking= 6/2=3, 3 x 60 = 180 feet
Stopping = Thinking + Braking = 60 + 180 = 240 feet
Hope you follow that!
