reverse lights not working

I have just got a k reg nissan micra and the reversing lights do not work. Both bulbs are ok and there is no power getting to the bulb holders. There must be a switch around by the gear stick but I can't find it. Anyone got any ideas? Also, is this a MOT failure?

There's usually a switch on the actual gearbox ... somewhere...

Yeah ... it'll probably look a bit like a bolt, with a wire attached ...
