The 8-10 pins located by small springs which are pushed up (in profile/cam or cut of the key) when you insert said key they line up and you can turn it. If one or more of the pins gets sticky with age/gunk then they don't re-locate.
Try WD/40 spray or lock/graphite lubricant first. If that doesn't work it could be a broken spring which will need replacing. Good locksmith could rebuild. But would be cheaper to get replacement barrel from breakers.
