Fiesta ventilation valve

My daughter has a ford Fiesta N reg diesel. The crankcase ventilation valve on the cylinder head cover has blown off. I assume this is due to excess pressure but why? The oil level is correct.

A mechanic told me certain pipes on the crankcase ventilation system are prone to getting blocked with gunge and need cleaned out with an airline every now and then - which pipes ? I don't know as it was him that done it - ask a knowledgeable mechanic.
