what are the pros and cons of buying a used car? what should I be looking out for? who are the recommended dealers / retailers? what about these big showroom type places?

Supermarket-style showrooms have some really good prices but this is usually because they have brought in cars from elsewhere in Europe and may not necessarily be to UK spec. Things like Standard AC, Sunroof, Alloys etc may be omitted from cars not meant for the UK.
Buying privately, you won't get a warranty unless there is something left over on the manufacturer one or the seller took out there own and still has something left.
