No log book
I've just bought a car from a friend and they cant find the log book. I need to tax the car will I have to send off for a new log book before I can tax it or can I just take Insurance and MOT certificate?

Just to let you know, Loosehead is right. You can fill in a V62, available from licence issuing post offices or DVLA local Offices, but this will cost you �19.00.
You must not use vehicle or even park it on the public road whilst unlicensed, it must be on private property. As you risk getting a fine or you may get vehicle clamped/towed away !!

why not get your friend to get a duplicate log book then any extra expense incurred will be theirs. my stepson inquired about getting a log book as he had lost his and although they said he'd have to pay he pleaded ignorance and they let him off and sent him a new one which only took a few days. once your friend gets the new log book you can apply for the tax then, but like it has already been said don't use it or park it on the road!
