If i buy a car with a personalised numberplate is it possible to get the original car numberplate back from the DVLA? How much would this cost? I assume the car would come with the paperwork saying what the original numberplate was?

usually,if you take a private plate off a car,you will get the original number back, but not all the time,it might tell you the original no in the service book or on the mot,it depends on how long it has been on the car,if you want to change it back, you will have to put the private number on a retention certificate, which costs 125 for a year.forms and how it works are available from your local DVLA office.

Eek, i don't think i'd change it if it's going to cost that much. There should be some kind of certificate detailing the change of reg shouldn't there? To prove the car is the same one and it is really an 04 reg....?
the cost is 105 not 125,my mistake, when the plate was changed there would have been a piece of paper detailing changes, but as long as the V5 has all the correct details, thats all you need.

Ok, thanks.
Most times you will be allocated the original number. The 105 fee is for retaining the personalised number is made up of two parts. 25 per year to keep it on a retention certificate and 80 transfer fee. This 80 is only payable once for however long you keep it on retention. Check out what the number could be worth.
