The battery light came on and then 2 miles later the power steering failed on my car. Does anyone know what the problem actually is with the vehicle, and can I fix it myself?

sounds like the auxiliary drive belt has broken.

As David says - the Auxillary drive belt has broken - use to be called the fan belt, but in your case also drives the power steering pump.
