citroen xm alarm procedure

please help trying to sort out an air leak on my xm 2.5 td estate.checking the battery leads and the negative pulled out of the holder and it was only reaching one terminal screw so i pulled out all 3 cables, one fat and two small to strip off 1/4 inch insulation and re-insert.BIG MISTAKE
alarm on now and i cant get it off.i have 2 keys, a garage key i use every day and a transponder /remote key that has seen better days
the advice i have is open all 4 doors bonnet and boot, put transponder key in the ignition and the alarm will reset.this is not happening.
on stage one the car lets me put in my 4 digit code in the keypad and the engine starts. during this time tha alarm goes off and the headlights flash for 15 seconds then go off,the engine runs but if i close any of the 6 doors the 15 second alarm repeats.all the time a red small flashing light is on the dash that i have never seen before
any ideas ?

hi try disconnecting battery turn ignjtion on then reconnect battery this should re set alarm

the previous owner,still a family member who fitted a cambelt 18 mths ago and advised me how to set the alarm and it did not work,
10 blokes on my building site
the man i work with who fancies himself as the diy sos of cars
2 ,TWO let me say again TWO citroen mechanics currently employed at a citroen main dealers in birmingham, one of whom sat in the car
