Ethel, with respect, I did choose the car within what I could afford. I am not in the income bracket whereby I can pick a car that is, according to the government, eco-firendly. I am restricted financially to buying a car that is second-hand so I cannot consider any newer model that is now 'greener'.
As for the other option to driving, I live in a rural area. It is well resourced by a train service that gets you to the main towns but elsewhere is problematic with a skeleton bus service. There was a time, and I remember it well from my childhood in North Wales, that buses reached most of the outlying communities from my home town. I could write you an essay on why this will never happen again.
My son uses the bus service to take him on a journey which is less than one mile and it costs him �2. This will increase, no doubt, because of the rise in fuel costs and the owners will see it as a sharp opportunity to add a bit more on to the 'hike'. It is not operated according to a regulated hourly basis because the purpose of its operation is based on financial return, etc, etc.
This country's fabric of cities, towns and villages has been determined by motorised transport and it's going to take many years for the issue to be redressed.
