I have a 1997 2.4 auto previa.There are two cables attached to the carburettor one goes to the foot pedal the other appears to go to the gearbox but seems to be broken as there is a lot of slack.Can anyone tell me what this cable does and how difficult it is to replace.

hi, i think the cable your asking about is the kickdown cable which makes the gearbox go down a gear when you accelerate hard. it will be slack until you put your foot down. get someone to put their foot to the floor while you check the cable. [with the engine off]

It is meant to have some slack.it is a kick down cable to enable the auto gear box change down when you floor the accelerator.
Just confirm it moves with the lever on the side of the auto box as you floor the accerator pedal.

thanks for answers I have looked at the cable and given the inner cable a pull it comes out but does not return

Return spring is on the gearbox.You can check if your kick down is not working by normally driving through all your gears and safely make quick flat out accelaration,the engine revs will go up at the same point as the transmission changes gears down.similar to an overtaking manueaver so to speak.

this car deosnt have a carburrettor, it has a throttle body as its fuel injected
