Has anyone used one of those gadgets which plugs into the cig lighter and replaces jump leads? My battery is coming up for 6 years old and although I haven't had any problems, I'm just wondering if it will survive another winter, hence my query. It would certainly work out a lot cheaper than a new battery. Many thanks.

Eventually the battery will fail, and no amount of charging it will help.

I suggest you save your money, and put it towards a new battery which you will need before long.

A new battery is quite cheap compared with the cost and hassle when it dies on you at the worst moment (which it will)

If you make a few enquiries while the pressure is off about where to get one at the best price, and fit it yourself, it might surprise you how cheaply you can do it.

Consider doing it soon anyway, for peace of mind.
My 8 year old Corsa battery gave up the ghost 2 weeks ago. Halfords want 59 for one. I bought a Numax brand for 35 & 7 carriage on the web. A Varta is 43 plus carriage from the same people. I agree with Panic Button about the economies.
I understand your concern If the battery is of the type that you can check the cells, well check it, if it makes you feel better take it to an auto electrician & ask them to check the battery. a battery to a point will give you an indication if its on the way out by the way the car starts, a diesel car is more heavy to turn over than a petrol keep that in mind.
Hi Liz65,
Yes, I have one bought through Easylife for around 30 and it works. It is a good standby considering a garage call-out can be expensive and you could save a 'no call out' reduction in your breakdown service.
