How old do you have to be to learn to drive?

Can anyone tell me how old you have to be to learn to drive? It was 17yrs when i was young but as it gone to 18yrs now? my son will be haveing his 16th birthday in Feb 09 & and he says its 17? But i thought it had gone up to 18yrs? Thanks alot

NO, NO , NO , NO , NO IT HASN'T CHANGED!

Seems to be a huge myth doing the rounds for the last 7-8 years. It was suggested that it should rise, but this never went any further, it is STILL 17, and continues to be unless changed by the Government.

Although for young men it should be at least 21.

It depends where you live but in the UK it is 17

...and remember, anyone supervising him must have held a full licence for 3 years AND be over 21...so his mates who have just passed can't take him out.

Of course, on private land you can drive at any age. But 17 to drive on public roads (which, by the way, include anywhere the public have access to, so car parks, golf courses etc are all off limits to those under 17. Your own farmland would be OK).

sorry doglady has just reminded me of learning to drive, 14 years old being taught to slide a mark two escort around a figure of eight marked out with straw in a paddock on my grandparents farm :)
