See how the hose is to the right of the pic? Well imagine that was a real petrol pump you driving toward, then it would mean that your car would be situated beside it to reach the petrol cap on the passenger side of the car. If you flip the picture in your mind so the hose is at the other side, then the cap would be on the drivers side.
It doesn't matter where on your dash the pic is, it's what side the hose is at that matters.

No, not true... I heard something similar on Top Gear not so long ago. If the handle on the pump symbol in the guage is on the right hand side then the filler will be on the right hand side... Not so in either case I'm afraid.. I have a Honda Civic and happened to remember what i heard on TG when I pulled into fuel up and mentioned it to a friend that was in the car with me only to be WRONG !!! The fuel guage is on the right hand side of the Clocks and the handle on the pump symbol is on the right but the fuel filler is on the left handside (nearside) of the car...
sddsdean is correct for every car I have been in over the last 2 or 3 years - and that is a lot of cars. Strangely very few fords.
And sigma, on every car 1) you can see where the doors are without getting out to look, 2) it doesn't involve awkward manouevring if you get the door location wrong and 3) they generally don't vary much.
For someone like me who regularly drives different cars, and usually has to put fuel in them, the little arrow is a godsend. I am constantly amazed that so few people are aware of this.
