my astra estate 1.7 diesel is hard to start despite complete starter motor overhaul and brand new battery. now when it does start it cuts out every time i stop and even slow down in traffic,

Try adjusting the engine idle speed.

and cleaning out the fuel filter.

Sounds like classic air leak in fuel supply. Any fuel hoses leaking etc ?. Garage should sort it fairly cheaply for you. They can also check the pressure of the supplied fuel to the injectors.
