I thought licences to age 70 came in well over 20 years ago so yours shouldn't actually need renewal. When does/did it expire?

Don't think it's that complicated anyway
Although not answering your question, my mother held one of the old style red-book licenses back in the 1930s. I think you needed to renew them every three years or so. In the early 1970s, she decided that she needed to drive again, having not held a license for over 30 years. Having forgotten how to drive, she had to take driving lessons and pass her test to obtain a license.

If the same happened today, she could legally have driven a car without knowing how to drive.
Your licence should still be valid but your driving may not up to coping with today's roads... why not contact the DVLA on 0870 240 0009 (8:00am to 8:30pm Mon-Fri, 8:00am to 5:30pm on Sats) to check with them - if your health situation has changed, then they need to know (diabetes, eyesight etc)... I would definitely advise you go on a *refresher* course with a reputable driving school before venturing out on those roads... there is an awful lot more traffic nowadays, plus the Highway Code has changed too.. lots of new signs and road markings that may not be familiar with. What sort of car do you anticipate driving in ? Are you ok with all of the modern innovations on cars these days ?
Yes, please go on a refresher course. Or at least inform us when you plan to drive so we can stay in that day :-)
Your only 50, so I am sure you can get your driving up to a good standard with a refresher course. You may need to build up your confidence to prepare you for the many lunatic younger drivers you will encounter. Good luck, go for it !
