Antifreeze should be changed reguarly as it inhibits rust within the engine, also most antifreezes are alcohol (ethylene glycol) based so become ineffective after a while.
P.S.
Although it apparently tastes very nice, it is quite deadly, if you catch your dog drinking it off the garage floor get it to the vet pronto.

Hi Dot, just seen your post, it seems from your post that you have left the coling systen either go very low on water/Antifreez or your systyem was frozen to indicate that the temp Gauge was going into the red, the indication of low coolant level will be your heater is also indicates an air lock in the system, get it sorted ASAP Dot otherwise you will pay the full price (HEAD GASKET) when topping up add the amount requiered into your system. A merry exam to you, and all, also to all that read this post.
still trying to figure out if this is a joke!
Overheating is nothing to do with anti freeze. There is no regular period for topping up.If you are topping up then your car is losing coolant. That is a different problem. Possibly a loose hose or dodgy head gaskett. Water and anti freeze go in the cooling system, radiator etc. Oil is completely separate.
